Stories in the park |
A rider at the stable, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park. The stone walls have a story of their own: when Windsor Mill Road was widened and the Belvedere Stable near Forest Park and Security Boulevard was demolished, the city used stones from the old roadside fences to build this replacement stable in the park — leased back to the original owner. It was first called Belvedere Stable, and later Crimea Stable when a new tenant took over the lease. Parts of those walls are still standing today. |
Your memories are part of this park's history. Help us preserve them.Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park has been part of Baltimore's life for generations. People have fished in its streams, ridden its miniature train, learned to ride bikes on its trails, volunteered to restore its woods, and found quiet in its forest when the city felt like too much. Those memories belong to the park's story — and we don't want to lose them. Stories in the Park is a new community storytelling initiative from Friends of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, in partnership with the Baltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) and the University of Baltimore Archives. We're collecting the memories, photographs, and stories that make this park a living part of Baltimore's history — and preserving them for the people who will love this park long after us. |
What we're looking forThere's no wrong answer. We're interested in all of it
Old photographs or videos are especially welcome — even if they're just snapshots. If you have prints you'd like to share but can't scan them yourself, bring them to a Second Sunday table and we'll help. What happens to your story?Every submission becomes part of a growing community archive, preserved in partnership with the University of Baltimore Archives. Your memories will help researchers, historians, future park stewards, and neighbors understand what this park has meant to the people of Baltimore, and why it's worth protecting. We may also share stories (with your permission) in our newsletter, on our website, or in future programming. About our partnersBaltimore National Heritage Area (BNHA) connects people to the historic landscapes, stories, and cultures of the Baltimore region. University of Baltimore Archives preserves primary sources that document the history of Baltimore and the surrounding region, making them accessible for research and education. Together, we're building an archive that belongs to everyone who has ever loved this park. |
