Friends of Gwynns falls leakin park |
The Friends of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization established in 1983. We are dedicated to preserving, enhancing, and promoting Gwynns Falls-Leakin Park as a Maryland natural oasis. We believe the park is crucial to the health and well-being of individuals and communities, as well as to the economic development of West Baltimore and beyond.
Since our name is so long, we usually go by the acronym, FOGFLP - which we pronounce as FOG-FLIP. We have an active volunteer board and a long history of advocating for Gwynns Falls-Leakin Park.
We sponsor and co-sponsor activities within the park, ranging from hikes to volunteer cleanups. Our members also perform a lot of hands-on maintenance of walking and hiking trails and coordinates volunteer groups who wish to do community service in the park.
Our current priority is advancing the establishment of a City-State Park Partnership to manage Gwynns Falls-Leakin Park. For decades, the park has suffered from underinvestment, negative perceptions, and a lack of dedicated staff. Baltimore's underfunded Department of Recreation and Parks (BCRP) oversees a massive system of more than 250 facilities and nearly 5,000 acres. BCRP has excellent employees and in particular, an outstanding forestry department, but it does not have the funding and resources that this large and complex landscape requires.
