Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park — Vision & Priorities for 2026

I’m honored to join the Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park as the new Executive Director.

As a lifelong naturalist, I’ve dedicated my career to one core belief: that every community deserves access to safe, beautiful, and welcoming green spaces.

I believe so deeply in that vision — and in the future of Baltimore — that I made the heartfelt decision to leave a job I loved: serving as Director of the ENOUGH Initiative at the Maryland Governor’s Office for Children, where I led a multi-million-dollar effort to address concentrated poverty across the state.

Now, I bring that same passion, experience, and urgency here — to this remarkable park.

This park — Baltimore’s largest woodland — has always had that potential. And now, together, we have the power to transform it.

That’s why I’m thrilled to share our vision for 2026, grounded in three pillars that reflect what this space means to all of us.

Warmly,

Pickett Slater Harrington

Gwynns Falls Leakin Park (GFLP) is entering a pivotal year. With the advancement of the state–city partnership, renewed community energy, and growing stewardship efforts, FY2026 offers an opportunity to reshape the future of Baltimore’s largest urban woodland park. Our vision focuses on strengthening what works, improving what needs care, and centering the community in every aspect of the park’s evolution.

This year, our work is guided by three pillars that define what the park can and should be for Baltimore: welcoming, well-cared for, and community-powered.

PILLAR 1: ACCESS & INCLUSION

A park that is open, welcoming, safe, and usable for all people and all neighborhoods.

Summary

In FY2026, we will focus on making GFLP a place where every resident — regardless of age, ability, or background — feels invited, connected, and empowered to explore the park. This includes expanding diverse programming, improving entrances and signage, and removing barriers that have historically limited access.

Strategic Priorities Connected to This Pillar

  • Trailhead and entrance improvements, especially in underserved neighborhoods
  • Updated signage and wayfinding across major corridors
  • Expanded free programming for youth, families, and diverse cultural communities
  • Increased programming and a signature annual community event to draw new audiences into the park

PILLAR 2: CARE & BEAUTIFUL SPACES

A park that is safe, clean, restorative, and maintained to the highest standard.

Summary

GFLP has extraordinary natural and historic assets — but they require consistent stewardship. In FY2026, we will prioritize maintenance, beautification, safety improvements, and the restoration of historic spaces. Our goal is to create an environment that residents are proud to visit and volunteers are excited to care for.

Strategic Priorities Connected to This Pillar

  • Streamlined trail maintenance and safety improvements
  • Restoration and beautification of historic sites (e.g., Winans Chapel, Mansion grounds)
  • Expanded invasive species removal, native plantings, and habitat restoration
  • Regular cleanup cycles and volunteer stewardship events
  • Investment in tools, materials, and on-the-ground care infrastructure

PILLAR 3: ENGAGED COMMUNITY & ADVOCACY

A park shaped and protected by the people who use it — with shared governance, shared voice, and shared responsibility.

Summary

FY2026 is a critical year for advancing the state–city partnership and ensuring that the community’s voice drives decisions about the park’s future. Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park will deepen neighborhood engagement, strengthen volunteer leadership, and advocate for long-term investment and equitable management.

Strategic Priorities Connected to This Pillar

  • Active participation in the state–city partnership transition process
  • Launching quarterly neighborhood engagement forums across 18 bordering communities
  • Building a “Park Ambassador” volunteer program
  • Expanding school and organizational partnerships for learning and stewardship
  • Growing donor and volunteer participation through the “Park Protector” campaign

Looking Ahead

FY2026 is about moving from aspiration to action. By focusing on access, care, and community-driven advocacy, we will improve safety, expand programming, restore beauty, and prepare GFLP for a strong future under shared state–city stewardship.

Together, we will build a park that Baltimore is proud of — a park for every neighbor, every family, and every generation.

Join us in shaping the future of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park, and help us enter 2026 strong. Please donate; we appreciate any amount.
