The Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park have filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City and BGE

Construction of the Granite Pipeline through Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park was Mismanaged from Day 1!

FOGFLP has filed a lawsuit against Baltimore City and BGE over construction of the Granite Pipeline through the heart of Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park.

  • 12.23 acres of heavily forested, urban wilderness in the heart of the park. A mixed hardwood forest, habitat for many species of plants and animals turned into a 50’ wide clear-cut over 2 miles long.
  • Baltimore City violated the City Charter by allowing BGE to construct the pipeline before granting BGE rights to the property. By doing so the City lost any leverage it might have had with BGE to negotiate fair compensation for the parkland taken from the citizens of Baltimore.
  • The City accepted just $1.4 million in a deal with BGE to use the property for 25 years. The Recreation & Parks Department reportedly calculated the value of the property at $14 million.
  • The Friends repeatedly urged City leaders to obtain fair compensation from BGE for the lost parkland. Our pleas were totally ignored and we were cut out of the process.
  • Even after notifying the City that it was in violation of the City Charter, the Mayor and City Council continued to forge ahead with this illegal and flawed deal with BGE.
  • BGE bought thousands of copies of Healthy Holly from Mayor Pugh before this debacle.

City officials must be held accountable for their illegal actions.

BGE must pay fair compensation for taking over 12 acres of parkland from the taxpayers of Baltimore City.

City leaders continually refer to Baltimore as a “poor city.” Little wonder when they are practically giving away more than 12 acres of this unique natural resource.

  • Gwynns Falls Leakin Park is the largest park in Baltimore.
  • Gwynns Falls Leakin Park is the 2nd largest urban wilderness in the nation.
  • Gwynns Falls Leakin Park has been called the “lungs of the city.”
  • Gwynns Falls Leakin Park is not just an urban wilderness park but is also historically significant and is 1 of only 49 National Heritage Areas designated by the federal government.
