Park Run - Free 5k Run and Walk (18 Apr 2026)

This free 5K run occurs every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM. All ages are welcome. While many serious runners join us, Parkrun is not a race-- it is a fun run or walk for good health or to track your times. There is an optional social afterwards.

Kids and strollers are welcome. Dogs too! (one dog per runner). Participants tend to span all age groups and levels of fitness.

Our group of dedicated runners let almost nothing stop them, so we're out if it's sunny and beautiful, or if it's snowy and cold. Rarely, weather conditions or global pandemics do force us to re-route or cancel. Check out our Facebook page for last minute updates.

Spring Ephemeral Hike with a Naturalist (18 Apr 2026)

Join us on a hunt for those elusive harbingers of spring!

Yellow Trout Lily

One of the more wonderful aspects of spring besides the longer days, warmer weather, returning greenery and blooming trees, is the wildflowers that dot the forest floor. The so-called spring ephemeral wildflowers take advantage of all the light that reaches them before all of the bigger plants grow back their leaves, like the trees and shrubs. Some of these ephemeral flowers will keep their blooms for a while showing off and/or calling local pollinators to visit them, while others are only there for the blink of an eye.

Come out with us and let's see what we can find. We will meet at Winans Meadow (4500 Franklintown Rd) and explore a stream valley, rock outcrops, and some seeps and a hillside area recovering from a bush fire in 2024.

Total walk length: 1-2 miles

Folks aged 10+ who enjoy quiet concentration and learning about botany are welcome. Botany beginners are welcome!

Please leave your dogs at home

This hike is free, but registration is required.

To ensure everyone has a meaningful learning experience, participation is limited to 15 people. A smaller group allows for quiet observation, and plenty of opportunities to ask questions about the plants and habitats we encounter.

Meet Thayer Young, your hike leader

Thayer Young is a volunteer with the Friends of Gwynns Falls Leakin Park, and tries to walk each trail in the park in each season. He recently worked with FOGFLP to update and redo the trail map brochure that is available at the main entrances to the park and can also be downloaded here. His day job is making maps and databases for small nonprofits, but he also loves to identify plants and is working with another naturalist on a plant list for the park. The list includes 200+ species so far.

Belmont Elementary & Leakin Park Restoration Project (25 Apr 2026)

Join FOGFLP for the 2026 Mayor's Spring Cleanup & Day of Service in Baltimore

This year FOGFLP is partnering with Belmont Elementary and its neighbors to begin work turning a schoolyard and park edge into a shared outdoor learning and gathering space.

Together, we’ll remove trash, clear invasive vines, and begin restoring the site.

This is more than just a cleanup. We are working to connect more people to the park and build community through stewardship, learning, and care.

Dress for the weather and protection from sun and insects.
We have a good collection of tools. But we can always use more. So if you have some you love to use, please bring them.

Please register so we know how many people to expect. We'll be reaching out with more information as the date gets closer.

Birding with Baltimore Bird Club (17 May 2026)

See Leakin Park in a new way with the Baltimore Bird Club! New birders will benefit from the expert advice of local residents Elise and Paul who have been birding in the Park for decades. You will be pleasantly surprised at the number and variety of avian species supported by the Park.

Experienced birders will wish to know that Leakin Park is a 1000+acre park in West Baltimore which contains mature and secondary forest as well as riparian habitats and some limited field habitat. The Park is poised to become a partnership park with the State of Maryland. We are hoping adding the State resources will allow for improved conservation and maintenance in this gorgeous forested Park.

It is recommended that you register by email at ekreiss@verizon.net or 410-367-8194, so that you may be updated in case of changes. Leaders: Elise and Paul Kreiss. Please feel free to contact them with questions.

Info about all Baltimore Bird Club events this year may be found on their website

We welcome adults and kids 10+ who can focus on quiet, contemplative activity. Kids have sharp eyes, and therefore make great birders! Please bring your own binoculars.
